- Dog owners are advised to prevent their dogs from consuming raw fish at Silverwood Lake due to the risk of salmon poisoning disease.
- This disease, transmitted through a parasite in raw fish, can be fatal to dogs but poses no threat to humans or other animals.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is warning dog owners to keep their pets away from raw fish at Silverwood Lake due to salmon poisoning disease.
Silverwood Lake is located south of Hesperia in the San Bernardino Mountains.
The disease is potentially deadly for dogs that eat certain types of raw or cold-smoked freshwater fish infected with a bacteria-like organism. The parasite does not affect people or other pets, and properly cooked fish is safe, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Symptoms of salmon poisoning disease include:
- Fever
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Lethargy
Without treatment, salmon poisoning disease is often deadly within two weeks.
If your dog has recently eaten raw fish and shows any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.
How to keep dogs safe
- Keep dogs on leash and away from water and fishing areas.
- Do not allow dogs to eat raw salmon, steelhead, trout and other freshwater fish.
- Properly dispose of fish waste.
