Authorities have revealed that the two dogs found alive at Gene Hackman’s home after his mysterious death are safe.

The screen legend, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead at their home in New Mexico on February 26 along with one of their dogs. Hackman and Arakawa’s bodies were discovered in separate rooms and the dog’s remains were found in a bathroom closet.

Two other dogs were located at the house – one was inside the property and one was in the grounds outside.

According to an update from the Santa Fe County Sheriff on Facebook: “The Santa Fe County Animal Control Division worked with family to ensure the safety of the two dogs.”

The alarm was raised on February 26 when somebody set to carry out maintenance work at the French Connection star’s home became concerned after receiving no answer from inside. Neighbourhood security were contacted and conducted a welfare check and spotted Hackman and Arakawa’s unresponsive bodies through a window.

Their bodies were in different places, with Arakawa in a bathroom and Hackman in a mud room off the couple’s kitchen.

There was no sign of forced entry at the property and no obvious signs of trauma to the bodies, leaving a number of unanswered questions in the case. There was speculation about carbon monoxide poisoning but both Hackman and Arakawa later tested negative.

An autopsy was performed. Initial findings noted no external trauma to either individual. Carbon monoxide and toxicology tests were requested for both individuals.”
