Dehydration in dogs is a serious condition that can lead to severe health issues if not promptly addressed. Symptoms to watch for include dry gums, excessive panting, lethargy, loss of appetite, sunken eyes, and decreased skin elasticity. A simple test for dehydration is to gently pinch the skin on your dog’s back; if it doesn’t snap back quickly, your dog may be dehydrated.

Just like humans, dogs rely heavily on water for their health and well-being. Water is crucial for maintaining normal body temperature, digesting food, eliminating waste, and lubricating joints. According to the American Kennel Club, water makes up about 60 percent of an adult dog’s body weight, underscoring its significance.

Veterinary research emphasises that water is a vital component in blood circulation and nutrient transportation throughout a dog’s body. A study published in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care highlights that even mild dehydration can impair a dog’s bodily functions, potentially leading to organ failure if left untreated.

Here are 10 foods that can keep your dog hydrated:

Bottle gourd: With a water content of about 92%, bottle gourd is highly hydrating. “Its mild flavour and soft texture make it suitable for dogs, and it can be cooked or pureed into their food. The high water and fiber content aids in digestion and helps maintain proper hydration levels,” says Ishmeet Singh Chandiok, Dog chef, canine nutritionist, and founder of Harley’s corner (ready-to-eat wet dog food brand), Bengaluru.

Broth: Bone broth is predominantly water, making it an excellent hydrating option. According to Chandiok, its savoury flavour can also entice dogs to drink more fluids, particularly beneficial for those that are reluctant to drink plain water. “The electrolytes in bone broth, such as sodium and potassium, help maintain fluid balance and support cellular functions”
Cucumbers: With a water content of approximately 96 percent, cucumbers are one of the most hydrating foods you can give your dog. They are also low in calories, making them an excellent snack for overweight dogs,” says Chandiok.

Watermelon: Composed of about 92 percent water, watermelon is one of the most hydrating fruits. “Removing seeds is essential as they can pose a choking hazard and potentially cause intestinal blockages. The high water content in watermelon helps keep dogs hydrated and provides a refreshing and sweet taste that most dogs enjoy,” Chandiok adds.

Apples: Apples are about 86 percent water and are a good source of fiber and vitamins A and C, says J.S. Rama Krishna, Business Head, Pet Food, Growel Group, Hyderabad. He adds, “Always remove the seeds and core before giving apples to your dog to avoid potential choking hazards and toxicity.”

Strawberries: Strawberries contain around 91 percent water and provide antioxidants, fibre, and vitamins C and K. “Strawberries make a delicious and hydrating treat when given in moderation,” suggests Krishna.

Carrots: Carrots are about 88 percent water and are known for their crunchiness, which many dogs enjoy. They are also beneficial for dental health and are packed with beta-carotene and fibre.

Beaten curd: Beaten curd or yogurt contains about 85 percent water, contributing to hydration. Chandiok says, “It also provides a smooth texture and cooling effect, making it a refreshing treat.” Ensure the yogurt is plain and unsweetened, as artificial sweeteners like xylitol are toxic to dogs.

Peaches: Peaches are about 89 percent water and are full of vitamins A and C. Ensure you remove the pit, as it can be a choking hazard and contains cyanide, which is toxic to dogs.

Blueberries: Blueberries have a water content of around 84 percent and are packed with antioxidants, fibre, and vitamins C and K. They are a perfect hydrating treat when given in moderation.

Always consult with your veterinarian before making significant changes to your dog’s diet to ensure their specific health needs are met.
