VALLEY, Ala. (WTVM) – Two Cane Corso dogs, owned by a next-door neighbor, attacked a 78-year-old woman in Lee County. She later died of her injuries.
Today, we spoke with the victim’s husband and neighbors in the community.
“Patricia was a good woman. She was my buddy, my friend, my wife,” said Thomas Burt.
The 73-year-old shared that he and his wife of 35 years were not big on taking pictures, but he did share one taken earlier in the week.
“She had leg injuries, bite marks on her leg that went all the way to the bone,” Burt said. “Her arm was so crushed it was folded up behind her head. It was unreal.”
Neighbors reported that this was not the first time the dogs had attacked other dogs or people. Carol Mims mentioned that the two dogs had previously attacked a dog walker. The Cane Corso is known for being dominant and fiercely protective, with an imposing appearance, according to the American Kennel Club.
“The dogs were biting the dog walker and the little dog. My son drove up and took them away from the big dogs,” Mims noted.
Burt explained that his wife underwent hours of surgery at Piedmont Columbus Regional but went into cardiac arrest the next morning. He said his wife was well loved by everyone.
“She was my buddy. Anytime you wanted to do something, she was game,” he added. “Everybody loved her and she loved everybody. She never met a stranger.”
Burt recounted that on Monday, his wife walked over to the neighbor’s house and hugged her friend who was outside, and both dogs went into attack mode. Burt said he and his wife had known the two-and-a-half-year-old dogs since they were puppies.
“We’re both retired and spent most of our time right here at this lake,” he said with tears in his eyes. “I don’t know what I’m going to do without her.”
