Hartsville man charged after two dogs attack multiple people

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (WMBF) – Police have charged a man with owning dangerous animals after two dogs on the loose terrorized a neighborhood for a week.

The Hartsville Police Department confirmed that 49-year-old Saronta Campbell was charged after two pit bulls attacked and chased multiple people in the area of Rice Street.

Reports obtained by WMBF News state officers were called to the area of Marion Avenue on Monday for an animal attack, the victim told officers she was walking on Rice Street when the two dogs attacked her.

She was taken by EMS to an area hospital and stated that two others were injured in the attack.

The report shows while officers were looking for the other victims they witnessed the two dogs attacking a man in his front yard on Rice Street. The man was able to get to his porch and lock out the dogs but sustained a bit to his leg.

He was treated by EMS but did not go to the hospital, according to the report.

Officers were able to learn from multiple victims that the dogs had been chasing and attacking other people for a week.

Witnesses stated that one victim had to beat the dogs off with a stick and jump a fence before they took off. He was not bit by the dogs.

One of the victims was able to identify Campbell as the owner of the dogs and police contacted him. The report stated that Campbell said he was out of town and said the police would “just have to kill the dogs”

Police told Campbell he would need to report to the police department upon his return.

Officers had to kill the dogs after they presented a threat to the officers and the public.

Campbell was arrested and charged with owning dangerous animals. He was booked at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center but has since been released on a $10,000 bond.
