Fairhaven resident asks police to take ‘a few dogs’: 15 pit bulls. They’re up for adoption

  • Fairhaven police said a resident being evicted asked to surrender “a few dogs.” It turned out there were 15.
  • Twelve of the dogs are puppies. They’ll be fostered and then put up for adoption.
  • The adult pit bulls will be evaluated for potential adoption.

FAIRHAVEN — The Fairhaven Animal Shelter has 15 new dogs after a town resident surrendered them to police on Friday — including a dozen pit bull puppies.

About 9 a.m. Friday, Fairhaven Animal Control Officer Terry Cripps received a call from a resident who said they were being evicted at noon and had “a few dogs” to surrender. When asked how many dogs they had to surrender, the resident revealed they had 15 pit bulls who needed a new home: three adults and twelve 10-week-old puppies.

According to Fairhaven police, Cripps and members of the department responded and removed the dogs one at a time.

All 15 dogs are being boarded at the Fairhaven Animal Shelter. Six puppies will be transferred to Forever Paws Animal Shelter in Fall River for fostering. The remaining dogs will remain at the Fairhaven Animal Shelter until they are old enough to have proper vaccinations and be deemed “adoptable.”

The three adult pit bulls are also being evaluated for potential adoption.

Fairhaven provides support for pit bull puppies

After Fairhaven police asked for help providing dog food and supplies, members of the community stepped up immediately, providing hundreds of pounds of food and more.

The Fairhaven community stepped up to donate hundreds of pounds of puppy food after 15 dogs were surrendered last week. Fairhaven Police initially requested donations to help the Fairhaven Animal Shelter’s efforts to care for the dogs. The response was huge.

“Thank you so much to everyone who answered our call for puppy supplies,” said Chief Daniel Dorgan. “The overwhelming response to our request has warmed all of our hearts. The Fairhaven community is amazing!”

The shelter now has plenty of provisions for the surrendered animals.

“If you haven’t already ordered anything, please wait a little longer to make a donation for our puppies,” said Lt. Timothy F. Souza, the Department’s Public Information Officer. “The amount of provisions our community has provided is staggering. We are grateful to our residents for their kind support.”
