CHILLICOTHE ― More than a thousand dogs find there way into the Ross County Humane Society every year, but in PAWSitive news hundreds of them find their forever homes every year.
In 2024, the Ross County Humane Society provided shelter and care for 1,223 dogs, which was a 25% increase from 2023, according to a press release from the shelter.
The Humane Society adopted out 472 dogs in 2024, with 293 placed with rescue partners and 176 being reunited with their owners.

“Last year presented many challenges, but our dedicated staff and community supporters stepped up to ensure that every adoptable dog had the best chance for a better future,” said Jenn Thomas, Executive Director at the Humane Society. “We are proud of the work done in 2024 and remain hopeful for continued progress in 2025.”
According to the release, the Humane Society receives dogs in various ways, such as strays being brought in by the dog warden, dogs surrendered by owners or euthanasia, and dogs who were in neglectful situations.
One situation that brought in more dogs to the shelter was a significant hoarding case that involved more than 60 dogs.
But while the shelter aims to find homes for all adoptable dogs, 332 dogs were humanely euthanized in 2024 due to medical or behavioral issues that presented safety concerns.
The release stated that the Humane Society looks ahead to 2025 with a focus on increasing adoptions, adding more spay and neuter programs and to help provide resources to help pet owners retain their pets and how to rehome them when necessary.
