Santa Barbara Humane offers a collection of training courses at their Santa Maria and Santa Barbara locations, and the public is invited to sign up for a new course offered to help smaller dogs learn basic manners.
Currently only available at the non-profit’s Santa Barbara location, the six-week course is designed to provide small dogs (25 lbs. and under) with the confidence and skills they need to thrive—without the intimidation of larger classmates.
The course will begin on March 4, and will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Santa Barbara Campus at 5399 Overpass Road.
“Small dogs can sometimes feel intimidated around their larger counterparts, which can make traditional training classes a bit overwhelming,” said Christine Brewer, Manager of Animal Behavior at Santa Barbara Humane.
“This class is designed specifically for them—giving small dogs a comfortable space to learn, build confidence, and develop good manners alongside dogs their own size,” Brewer finished.
This class is ideal for small breed dogs four months and older who need to learn the basics, such as sit, stay, polite leash walking, and greeting people without jumping. Using positive, reward-based training, our experienced trainers will guide dogs and their owners in a calm, supportive environment tailored just for small pups.

Santa Barbara Humane also operates a Santa Maria Dog Training Center at 1517 Stowell Center Plaza, Suite B.
Registration for training courses at the north county facility — which include a puppy course, a basic manners course, a shy dog class and more — are also available on the Santa Barbara Humane website.
