DeKalb County inmates are training shelter dogs to improve adoption chances, providing both pets and people with a second chance.
DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with the DeKalb County Animal Adoption Center to help shelter dogs find permanent homes while giving inmates a chance to develop new skills.
Through the program, inmates will work with a new dog each month, providing basic training and socialization to make them more adoptable. Officials say the initiative benefits both the dogs and inmates by fostering responsibility and reducing stress.
Once the dogs are ready for adoption, their photos will be posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page.
Those interested in adopting can contact the animal shelter at (256) 304-0474 to complete an application.
