LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) — A video shared on social media led to the arrest of a 36-year-old man accused of hitting a dog with a rock in Las Cruces.
According to the Las Cruces Police Department, Luis Cobos was arrested Wednesday after constructors, working near the 1300 block of Mission Nueva Drive, recorded a video that appears to show Cobos in his backyard throwing rocks at a dog.
LCPD said that the incident was reported at around 10:15 a.m., and by the afternoon officers had obtained a warrant to search the property and take custody of both dogs.
They found four dogs in total on the property.
Detectives, with the help of Animal Control, took two basset hounds (one male, one female) to a local veterinary clinic to get checked for injuries.
According to LCPD, the male basset hound had signs of physical abuse and was given treatment.

Police emphasized that none of the animals belong to Cobos, but to a person who lives with him, and that by all accounts, this person has taken good care of the pets.
The video that purportedly shows Cobos mistreating the dog circulated in social media garnering significant attention.
As a result, police are asking people passionate about the well-being of animals to not approach– or worse seek revenge– people from the household as they say that Cobos– and only Cobos– is accused of mistreating the dog.
Police encourage individuals who are passionate about pet welfare to refrain from approaching or retaliating against persons who reside at the home as no one else, but Cobos was involved in the mistreatment of the dogs.

According to jail records, Cobos was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center and charged with two counts of cruelty to animals and being held under a combined bond of $5,000.
