SAN ANTONIO — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
This week, we meet a pair of bonded dogs named Ziggy and Kaia who were surrendered to the Animal Defense League almost a year ago because their owner was suffering from allergies and couldn’t keep them any longer.
Kaia is a female 10-year-old Catahoula Leopard mix with Brindle coloring and Ziggy is a male 8-year-old black Lab mix. Ideally, shelter staff would like to see them be adopted together because they prefer each other’s company over other dogs.
They have been at the ADL since June 13, 2024.
They have lived in a home with small kids before, but shelter staff feel they would probably do better in a home with older kids. They would definitely enjoy being with an active family that will take them on long walks every day.
“On Christmas, I came to the shelter and took them out for a walk because I felt bad that it was their first time having to spend Christmas at the shelter,” said Jamie Gibson, Director of Lifestyle Initiatives at ADL. “Ziggy definitely follows Kaia’s lead when it comes to people. He waits to interact until Kaia comes over for pets and then he was quick to come over and lean against me for some attention.”
They are both current on all of their vaccinations, already spayed and neutered and very healthy!

Bonded pair looking for loving home, preferably together | Forgotten Friends
“Kaia is relaxed, walks well on a leash, and loves pets,” said shelter staff. ” Ziggy is adventurous, loves exploring, and gets excited for walks. He’s also a bit of a bed hog!”
Both dogs love getting treats and being petted.
“Kaia and Ziggy are a bonded pair who would love to be adopted together, but can be adopted separately,” said ADL staff. “Kaia likes to play with toys alone but not with Ziggy because she doesn’t like to share. Kaia is sweet with kids and strangers, and Ziggy usually follows her lead, making him generally friendly. They have both been adopted out by ADL before and are back due to no fault of their own.”
And best of all, if you’d like to adopt this bonded pair, there is no fee at all because they are what ADL calls “Diamonds in the Ruff.”
The dogs and cats that have been available for adoption at the Animal Defense League for four months or longer qualify as an “ADL Diamond in the Ruff”. This means the adoption fees have been waived so you can spend more on toys, beds, and treats to spoil them in their new home!
If you want to help ADL rescue and treat more pets in need, they will ask for a monetary donation in lieu of the adoption fee for these pets. Every bit you donate contributes to saving the next life of the abandoned, abused, or neglected pets in our community that we see daily.
“Kaia and Ziggy adore each other but you can tell they want to be able to feel safe and secure in a home again,” said Jamie. “For the past eight months, Kaia and Ziggy have been getting through shelter life the only way they know how—together. They’ve been each other’s support system, but they shouldn’t have to be each other’s whole world. Our greatest wish is for them to be part of a real family again!”

For whoever adopts Ziggy and Kaia, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
The ADL says this year alone they will save the lives of over 6,500 dogs and cats, many of which will require multiple specialized surgeries costing thousands of dollars. You can help by donating to their PAWS for a Cause Emergency Medical Fund, which plays a crucial role in this mission.
Maybe you’re not quite ready to adopt a dog, but still want to help out. Why not try fostering a dog.
