BRONSON, Fla. (WCJB) – After a Levy County man was arrested and dozens of dogs were taken from his home, officials at some animal shelters across North Central Florida say they’re either at or over capacity.
Levy County Sheriff’s deputies say Oscar Cruz-Baldo, 39, stabbed a dog in the head during a domestic violence incident last month.
Officials say the dog survived and that Cruz-Baldo was arrested last week on animal cruelty and aggravated assault charges.
53 dogs were taken from his property. The animals were then taken to various shelters, straining the operational power of North Central Florida groups.
The North Central Florida Humane Society currently has 120 dogs with 40 needing foster homes.
Humane Society officials say many of their dogs could use a break from the shelter and they ask for a commitment of at least two to four weeks.
Officials at the Lake City Humane Society say they’re also over capacity, they only have 61 kennels but currently have 80 dogs.
“We definitely are at max capacity, so we’re calling out for all people who are interested in fostering to please foster a dog, give them a warm home because also it’s getting chillier every night. So we definitely don’t want them here in our kennels,” said Valentina Zamora, the Foster Coordinator for the North Central Florida Humane Society.
The dog kennels at Alachua County Animal Services are full, officials stating that they’ve taken in 124 animals this month.
