4 dogs die in house fire on Indy’s near west side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Despite the best efforts of Indianapolis firefighters and EMS, four dogs rescued from a burning house on the city’s near west side did not survive.

Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department responded around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday to a house fire in the 2000 block of West New York Street. That’s just off Belmont Avenue south of Haughville.

Firefighters arrived and found heavy smoke coming from a single-story home. It took just over 20 minutes to bring the flames under control.

IFD says multiple people called 911 to report the fire, including a woman who told dispatchers she thought there were pets inside the house.

“The whole side of the house is burning down,” she said in a 911 call provided by IFD. “Are the dogs in there? I think we got animals in there.”

There were five dogs inside the house, according to IFD. Despite “valiant attempts” to save them, four of the animals perished.

One adult was displaced by the fire and will stay with relatives.

It’s not clear how or where the fire began. IFD says the house did not have working smoke alarms.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
