MUSCATINE, Iowa (KWQC) – Wildfires in Los Angeles last month forced thousands of people and animals to flee their homes and shelters.
Shelters in the danger zone were forced to evacuate their facilities, sending animals to other parts of the country.
Including right here in the Quad Cities Area.
Muscatine’s It Takes A Village Animal Rescue & Resources is known for their willingness to help animals who are in danger, whether it be from neglect or a natural disaster.
So, when they were alerted about dogs needing to be flown out of LA because of deadly wildfires, they took on the challenge.
Meagan Koehler is the president and founder.
“These are not animals that are displaced from their owners because of the fire,” Koehler said. “These are animals that were already in shelters in the danger zone…we relieve that population burden and we open up that space for them to be able to take those animals that were truly displaced from their homes due to fire.”
After two weeks of work, these dogs are now available for adoption after receiving a medical exam, their core vaccines, preventatives and testing for disease. They have also been microchipped.
Koehler says the process to adopt one of the dogs is easy and all adoption fees have been waived.
“Turnaround is very quick,” Koehler said. “Since we started [Wednesday morning] three animals have already been adopted, which we’re so grateful for…we just want these babies settled into homes. They have had enough disruption and trauma.”
Although three dogs have already been adopted, as of Wednesday night, they still have 37 more dogs looking for a home.
You can see all the available dogs, and apply for an adoption, right now on their website. You will know which dogs were brought here from California by clicking on the dog’s photo and reading the bio.
