WEWOKA, Okla. — The Wewoka Humane Society is urgently searching for the dogs who escaped out of a broken fence after their facility was vandalized.
“You know there are other dogs out there and they’re going to die,” said Anna Dodwell, a member of the pug rescue Homeward Bound.
Dogs from the Wewoka Humane Society are out loose in these snowy and freezing conditions after vandals struck the animal shelter on Tuesday.
“People or person or something vandalized the humane society property and tore the fence down…and I’m not sure how many, but several of the dogs got out and started running in this cold weather and snow and everything.”
Dodwell said Homeward Bound was set to pick up a pug named Ace from the shelter. She said many of the other dogs at the shelter were also spoken for with fosters and adopters lined up.
“The only thing that I can think of is maybe the people thought, well the dogs can find somewhere warmer. I know that’s crazy thinking, but I don’t know what would make someone do that. That’s just cruel.”
Thankfully, a good Samaritan happened to pick up Ace out of the cold and gave him a warm, cozy place to stay overnight.
“There was a woman who lives there who works at a store where this little pug ended up…I guess she got off work, she felt sorry for him and took him to her home and then found out where he’s from.”
Ace was one of the lucky ones.
Community members are still looking for the other dogs and Dodwell said the dogs are no match for these conditions.
“Animals can get frostbite and because the air is a little thinner whenever it’s cold like that, they can have difficulty breathing and different breeds have different problems in the cold, such as pugs. They can’t breathe very well anyway.”
Dodwell hopes that because Wewoka is a small town the dogs will be found soon.
As for Ace, she said he’s young, super sweet and she’s confident he’ll be adopted soon.
