ABILENE, Texas — The City of Abilene is looking to amend and update several portions of the animal related ordinances at their meeting on Thursday.
One of the items they will discuss is creating an ‘aggressive dog’ category for dogs who make unprovoked attacks on a another domestic animal.
“I mean, the owner is responsible for that dog, just like he’s responsible for his kids,” Abilene resident, Rick Daffron, said. “I mean, it’s the same thing.”
There is already a state law in place for dangerous dogs, which is a dog making an unprovoked attack on a person.
This aggressive dog category is “created to clearly regulate dogs on domestic animal attacks,” and place consequences as a result.
“I feel like people should be responsible for their dogs,” Abilene resident, Linda Humiston, said. and if they attack someone or another dog, they should be held liable.”
If your dog is deemed dangerous, the owner will have to build a secure enclosure, pay a $100,000 fee to secure liability insurance for damages by the dog, and annually register the dog with animal services. Abilene City Council said the ‘aggressive dog’ procedure would be similar to the ‘dangerous dog’ procedure.
“I believe that dogs should be inside a fenced yard, if he’s not inside a fence yard, he should be on a leash,” Daffron said. “It’s as simple as that.”
This ordinance, as well as several others, will be discussed at the City Council meeting on Thursday.
