Beloved terrier mix Scrim, who captured New Orleans’ heart with his daring escapes, is safe after a collaborative rescue effort with Trap Dat Cat and Zeus’ Rescues.
NEW ORLEANS — After months of eluding capture and becoming an unlikely local celebrity, Scrim, the runaway terrier mix, has finally been caught. The announcement came via an emotional Instagram post from Zeus’ Rescues, declaring, “WE GOT HIM!!!!! Much love to Trap Dat Cat. More details to come when I can breathe.”
Scrim’s saga began in 2024 when he escaped shortly after being adopted from Zeus’ Rescues. His escape triggered a city-wide effort to locate and secure him, with sightings reported across neighborhoods including Mid-City, the Lower Garden District, and Carrollton. Despite numerous attempts, Scrim showcased an extraordinary talent for evasion, often spotted on security cameras but always managing to slip away.
In October 2024, Scrim was captured for the first time and taken to Metairie Small Animal Hospital. He was treated for injuries including two embedded projectiles, likely from a pellet gun, abrasions, and a missing piece of his ear. Despite these setbacks, Scrim proved resilient and was deemed healthy after treatment.
However, his adventurous spirit wasn’t quelled for long. In November, Scrim made a daring escape from the second floor of Zeus’ Rescues director Michelle Cheramie’s home, leaping over 10 feet from a window — an escape caught on surveillance video and widely shared online. This bold move reignited public interest, with renewed sightings reported near Carrollton and the Audubon Zoo.
December saw Scrim reappear in Mid-City after six days without any sightings, spurring intensified rescue efforts. Zeus’ Rescues, in collaboration with community volunteers and Trap Dat Cat, set up food stations and trail cameras to monitor his movements.
