Tiny dog feels “brave” approaching birds, then she realizes their size

Hunting may be instinctual for dogs, but the size of the prey is definitely enough to put them off the task. A Yorkshire terrier from California has left internet users in stitches after changing her mind about hunting a crow upon realizing its size.

In a viral TikTok video shared in November by the pooch’s owner, under the username @miasworld143, the small pup, Mia, can be seen fiercely chasing a crow in her backyard, looking like she’s very much in hunting mode.

However, as she realizes how big the bird actually is, she immediately makes a U-turn, deciding instead to stand a few feet away, just observing the bird from a safe distance.

“Feeling brave until you realize how big crows are!” reads layover text in the clip. A caption says: “On second thought nevermind.”

Hunting is indeed an instinctual behavior that all pups inherited from their wild ancestors, the wolves. However, some breeds are much better hunters than others, as they have been bred for this purpose throughout history.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) previously explained that some breeds are great with locating prey, some can flush it out for you, and others are better at retrieving it. So which dog is a better hunter depends on what task they are faced with.

Dogs like the German wire-haired pointer are great at hunting for quarry, while spaniels are better at flushing birds and waterfowl. Dogs like Labrador retrievers are expert at retrieving, hence their name.

If your dog eats a dead animal they have hunted, you should have them checked by your veterinarian to rule out any risks. Dr. Jess Kirk says on Vet Explains Pets that dead animals can pose serious risks to our pups’ health, including the transmission of parasites and bacteria.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
