A Sisters man says he’s heartbroken after being forced to defend himself and his dog from three attacking dogs last week, resulting in lethal consequences.
Ty Godfrey took his dog out for a hike near Sisters on Thursday morning before coming across a pit bull laying in the road.
“I got out of the vehicle to go see what was wrong the dog and that’s when the dog popped from the snow and attacked me first. My neighbor got out of the vehicle and as she got out of the vehicle is when Dazey Mae slipped out and came to my rescue,” Godfrey said.
Dazey Mae is Godfrey’s German shepherd-lab mix. When she rushed to save her owner, two more pit bulls from a homeless camp attacked.

“Before defending myself, I defended my dog. I put my body over the top of her body and her vital organs. They were still latched on to her neck area … while another dog was on my shoulder trying to pull me away,” Godfrey said.
Godfrey, a dog lover, then said he had to take drastic actions.
“I just knew they weren’t going to stop. It breaks my heart knowing I had to do that to those animals,” Godfrey said.
During the harrowing attack and chaos, Godfrey stabbed the dogs in vital areas so they wouldn’t suffer.
“I stabbed all three of them in the neck and in their lungs. I made it quickly for them. I wasn’t just trying to stab them freely. I got them where they needed to be,” Godfrey said.
Two of the attacking dogs died at the scene. The third, found at a homeless camp, was later euthanized due to its injuries.
While Godfrey and Dazey will be okay, they didn’t make it out unscathed. Godfrey was bitten on his hands. Dazey suffering 27 wounds, including a tear in her ear and a puncture in her head.
“Don’t stop for an animal. If it looks like it’s in need, take a picture, pull up the road. Call 911, animal services. We all have big hearts. I have one of the biggest. I will not be doing that ever again,” Godfrey said.
Despite the dogs coming from a homeless camp, Godfrey still holds sympathy for the homeless community.
“Everybody’s so mad at the homeless community, but there’s only so much they can do as well,” Godfrey said. “They’re human like we are. They make messes and they don’t clean them up. I understand, but the mess that was made the other day is something I’m gong to be fighting for through our city council, our U.S. Forest Service. I’m going to fight tooth and nail to make sure this never happens again.”
Godfrey was found to be justified by Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office in his use of self defense.
DCSO said the attacking dogs’ owner, identified as Denise Peiffer, 56, of Sisters, was cited for three counts of Animal at Large and Animal Nuisance.
