Every dog has its day, and this year, it was Feb. 8.
Historic crowds of people, their golden retrievers and other dogs funneled into downtown Golden for the annual Goldens in Golden event.
Organizers and several annual attendees said this year’s participation was unprecedented, as people struggled to find parking and walk along the paths and closed-off streets.
Visit Golden, which started the event in 2019, explained on its Facebook page how the event has “gained quite a bit of popularity” and that the 2025 event was “the biggest year yet, which resulted in traffic challenges.”
The annual event draws thousands of local and out-of-state golden retrievers and their families to celebrate National Golden Retriever Day in Golden. While the national day falls on Feb. 3, the city celebrates its Goldens in Golden event on the closest Saturday.
This year’s weather was partly cloudy but mild, which may have contributed to the larger crowds. Last year’s snowstorm may have motivated some 2024 attendees to leave early or deter them from traveling into Golden at all.
Still, many attendees enjoyed the event despite the crowds, petting all the happy dogs and meeting the cute puppies. They also treated themselves and their furry friends to all sorts of treats unique to the day, like dog biscuits, pup cups and photo booths.
Visit Golden and city officials are planning adjustments for next year, with Visit Golden confirming that the 2026 date will be announced soon.
