CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (WSYX) — Law-enforcement officers are going to the homes of potential jurors who did not show up for jury duty in the case of a deadly dog attack.
ABC 6 is in Circleville on Monday, where Susan Withers, 61, and her 35-year-old son, Adam Withers are charged with involuntary manslaughter and several felonies related to alleged abuses of their dogs.
The charges stem from an incident in October when a pit bull owned by the Witherses attacked 73-year-old Jo Echelbarger and her dog, both of whom died. Investigations revealed that authorities, including the dog warden and police, were aware of the Witherses and their dogs. It was discovered that the dogs had ingested cocaine in a previous incident.
A jury of 12 was seated Monday morning, with a couple of alternates yet to be selected. During jury selection, at least three prospective jurors disclosed knowing the victim and expressed concerns about their ability to remain objective. Another potential juror, who worked with the Humane Society, also indicated potential bias.
Prosecutors have warned the jury that they will present gruesome autopsy photos and police body camera footage of the attack. The county dog warden, who is expected to testify, was present at the prosecution table during jury selection.
The Witherses have remained at the defense table throughout the proceedings, speaking little in court and appearing to have minimal interaction with their attorneys.
