Many dogs will have preferences on where they like to be petted—perhaps it’s their backs, bellies, or behind the ears. For one owner’s dog, it’s always been his chest and she didn’t realize why until she pieced it together from his adoption day.
In a January 28 TikTok video posted to the account @lazyboyleroy, a dog owner explained how she was wondering why her rescue dog always loves being stroked on his chest. While it’s a common spot dogs enjoy, she still couldn’t understand why. That is until she came across videos from when she first adopted him.
She told Newsweek via TikTok that she first adopted Leroy when he was about four months old. She found a throwback video from the first day she rescued him. She crouched down next to him, reassuring him that he was safe, and she comforted him with chest strokes.
That’s when a lightbulb went off and the tears started coming: he loves being petted on the chest because that’s what she’s done to him since the beginning of their relationship. She shared the video from their first day together and Leroy looked to be in heaven. He sat relaxed and calm as she petted his chest, knowing he was going to his forever home.

With over 1.1 million views and 167,000 likes on TikTok, the video brought people to tears. Her gentle touch became “his comfort zone” from their first moment together and he’s carried that with him since his adoption.
“Those eyes and the yawn o he loved u from the second he got adopted,” said one viewer.
A second echoed: “He remembers when he first met you and remembers how good it feels. I wanna cry we don’t deserve dogs.”
Another added: “It’s the first time he felt safe.”
Signs Your Dog Enjoys Your Petting
Sometimes it’s impossible to stop petting your dog because they’re too adorable not to shower with love. But are your dogs truly enjoying it? A closer look into their body language will reveal their feelings.
An article from Rover says dogs often give clues on whether or not they want the petting to continue. For example, they might approach you after you stop touching them or they’ll put their head in your lap. This welcomes more pets. They could also position their body in a specific way to show they want more and where.
However, it’s important to note a dog’s body language will also tell you when they’ve had enough. Try pausing every so often to gauge whether or not they still want attention.
