Charlevoix County’s favorite four-legged friends: Top dog names and breeds of 2024

CHARLEVOIX COUNTY — The results are in — Bella reigns as Charlevoix County’s most popular dog name in 2024.

According to data from the Charlevoix County Treasurer’s Department, 12 pups were registered with the name. Lucy, Bailey, Maggie and Daisy rounded out the top five.

When it comes to breeds, the Labrador Retriever continues to be Charlevoix County’s favorite.

The full list of top dog names in Charlevoix County last year includes:

When it comes to breeds, the Labrador Retriever continues to be Charlevoix County’s favorite, with 50 registered dogs. Labrador mixes and retriever mixes followed closely behind with 39 registrations. Other popular breeds include Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Chihuahuas.

The top 10 dog breeds registered in Charlevoix County in 2024 were:

Dog owners in Charlevoix County are required to register their pet dogs through the county’s Treasurer’s Department. According to Rachel Reynolds, the Charlevoix County Deputy Treasurer, the department issued just over 600 dog licenses last year.

“We issue a dog license for every registered dog in the county,” Reynolds said. “Owners can come into our office, go through the local Humane Society, or mail in their rabies certificate to receive their license.”

Dog licenses cost $5 per year for spayed or neutered dogs and $10 per year for those that are not. Licenses are issued based on rabies vaccination records, which are typically valid for three years.

The registration process ensures that dogs are vaccinated and accounted for in the county, contributing to public safety and responsible pet ownership. With Labradors and Bellas leading the pack, Charlevoix County continues to be home to many beloved and well-documented furry friends.
