An Alabama woman was mauled to death this week while feeding a pack of dogs as their owner was out of town.
On Thursday, Feb. 6, deputies from the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 9 a.m. local time about a dog attack at a local home alongside NorthStar EMS, the Echola Volunteer Fire Department and animal control officers, according to multiple outlets, including AL.com, The Tuscaloosa News and ABC affiliate WBMA.
A caller told authorities at the time that a pack of dogs was attacking a woman in front of a property, per all three outlets. Upon their arrival, deputies attempted lifesaving measures, but the woman did not survive. She was 46 years old, according to AL.com.
The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further information on Saturday, Feb. 8.
Per the Tuscaloosa News and WBMA, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit conducted an investigation at the scene. They discovered that the dogs belonged to the residence, where the woman was visiting to feed the animals while their owner was out of town.
Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy told AL.com that authorities will not release any additional information about the woman out of respect for her family. He added that no criminal charges are expected.
Footage shared by local Fox affiliate WBRC shows sheriff’s vehicles parked outside of a mobile home where the attack reportedly took place. Chief Will Cooper of the Echola Volunteer Fire Department told the outlet that the attack was “something I’d never seen before.”
“I always thought of dogs as man’s best friend, but I think these were the type of dogs that were very aggressive in some way,” he said. “And it was so unfortunate and disconcerting … trying to revive the person who was not coming back.”
The attack took place over six months after another Tuscaloosa County woman, who was 62 years old, was fatally attacked by a family dog back in July, as reported by the Tuscaloosa News.
Authorities with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit revealed at the time that they found the woman dead inside of a dog pen near the Berry community, shortly after a family member called 911. The dog was eventually put down.
