The Columbus North boys basketball team has become a freight train running full steam ahead.
The Bull Dogs rolled to their sixth consecutive win — their longest streak since late in the 2021-22 season — with a 69-39 victory against Connersville on Thursday.
“I think a big part of the streak that we’re on right now is the camaraderie stuff that we’re doing like going to Chapel together, team meals together, stuff like that,” said junior Caleb Ferguson, who scored a career-high and game-high 25 points. “I think that’s really brought our team together and helped us to play well.”
North (13-3) hit 11 3-pointers and shot 53 percent (24 of 45) from the field.
“They sat in a zone for most of the game,” North coach Paul Ferguson said. “We had a feeling they were going to play us that way. I thought we moved the ball well and did a great job of crashing when we did get a miss, which wasn’t very often. Just coming out with the right mindset and looking to pick up the tempo, we did a good job turning them over and then made that run, which put them in a tough spot.”
The Spartans (7-11) led 5-2 midway through the first quarter when the Bull Dogs went on a 20-0 run to take control. North stretched the lead to 30-9 at halftime.
“It started defensively,” Caleb Ferguson said. “We played well defensively, we picked up the pressure. We talked about before the game just bringing the energy.”
Austin Perry scored 10 points for the Bull Dogs, while Max Coomes had nine and Nate Enneking and Ben Ferguson each added seven. Garrett Long grabbed six rebounds to lead North to a 21-19 advantage on the boards.
“We came out a little soft at the start,” Caleb Ferguson said. “But offensively, we played well. We moved the ball, shared the ball well and shot well toward the end.”
