9 dogs found dead at boarding business; owner faces animal torture charges

MORA, Minn. (WCCO) – Nine dogs were found dead and nine others were in a severely neglected condition at an in-house dog boarding and training facility in Minnesota.

The owner of the facility now faces animal torture charges after the deaths occurred in her care, authorities said.

When Kayla Volk rescued Buddy, she knew her dog would have a long road ahead.

“He’s spunky when he is himself, when he’s not scared and anxious,” Volk said.

To give him a better start, Volk enrolled him in an 8-week in-home training program through Done Right Dogs, which is run by Moriah Krondak out of her home in Mora.

“The day that we dropped him off, the communication just went ghost,” Volk remembered.

Volk says more than 40 days passed with barely any updates. That was until an identification call came from the sheriff’s office.

“They’re like, ‘OK, well, we’re going to go in the house and see if he’s alive,’” Volk described. “I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And she had just given me an update just a couple of days prior.”

According to court documents, a family returned from vacation to find their dog had died in Krondak’s care.

The dog showed signs of malnourishment, which prompted the investigation.

Eventually, a welfare check uncovered dogs without food or water, while some were dead and others were crated or tied up.

In total, nine dogs were found dead and nine survived, including Buddy.

“I just cried. I was like, ‘This is not real,’” Volk said. “I literally sent him here to help him, and now this lady destroyed him even more.”

Buddy was discovered inside a kennel, covered in urine and feces. He had lost 12 pounds and broken nearly all his teeth.

“Why would you do this to an animal?” Volk asked. “Do you have a heart?”

Investigators say Krondak also tested positive for methamphetamine. She now faces 16 counts of animal torture.

“We want to speak up for the animals who couldn’t make it out because a majority of those animals were rescue dogs, and just because they’re rescue dogs and didn’t have homes doesn’t mean they’re not loved,” Volk said.

Krondak will be in court this week. She faces up to 26 years in prison if convicted.
