77 dogs seized from Colorado property after citizen report prompted concern

A large law enforcement animal rescue operation resulted in more than 80 animals being seized from a property in Colorado this week.

According to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, deputies executed a court-ordered search warrant at a local commercial kennel on February 24. The kennel had been operating in Custer County under a ‘special use permit’ and after a citizen complaint was received on February 13, a subsequent investigation established enough probable cause for the warrant.

A total of 24 personnel responded on Monday for the sake of rescue and additional investigation, seizing a total of 86 animals and transporting them to care facilities found around the region.

Animals rescued included 77 dogs, two horses, one donkey, three hens, and three cats.

Personnel that responded spent the majority of the day at the scene, with work stretching into the evening as gear, vehicles, and trailers were sanitized to prevent the spread of disease and sickness that may have been encountered at the property.

At this time, no additional details are being released related to the condition of the animals that were seized or the commercial operation that was involved as the investigation continues. All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty, with no formal charges having been filed at last report.

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office did, however, make a point to give a shout-out to an animal rescue that was involved in assisting with the situation – National Mill Dog Rescue out of Peyton, Colorado. In addition to providing one of two on-scene veterinarians, the dog rescue assisted with animal transportation and provided additional personnel. At this time, they’ll also be housing most of the dogs that were rescued and providing additional medical care. The sheriff’s office also noted that the same vehicle that was provided by National Mill Dog Rescue for this mission would soon be on its way to Oklahoma for a rescue involving 200 dogs. Animals that were rescued are not currently up for adoption, but the public will be notified if that changes.
