PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — Animal Control Officers and Pierce County Deputies seized 68 dogs from a home in Lakebay while serving a search warrant.
On July 18, authorities served a search warrant on a home after there had been a complaint from an individual who had purchased a King Charles Spaniel puppy from an alleged dog breeder. The complaint said that the puppy was sick and tested positive for Parvovirus.
According to Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, canine parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease. It can cause gastrointestinal illness and if left untreated can be life-threatening.
When authorities entered, they found 68 dogs in a double-wide trailer.
“There were many dogs caged all around the house and approximately 4-6 female dogs with litters of puppies loose inside the trailer,” the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said on Facebook. “Many of the dogs in cages did not meet the minimum size standard and there was no water.”
Authorities found dogs and puppies that were sick and lethargic. They immediately transported one puppy to a vet for emergency care, but it died while en route. Two other puppies were humanely euthanized after testing positive for Parvovirus and being too sick.
Multiple other puppies also tested positive and were put under observation.
The remaining dogs and puppies were taken to an animal hospital where they are going to be examined. Eventually, they will be transported to a boarding facility for the duration of the criminal investigation.
