A Milwaukee Police special investigations unit seized half a dozen dogs from a home where the animals were believed to have been trained for fighting, according to a criminal complaint. The complaint, filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Jan. 8, said the investigation started in October and centered on the dogfighting allegations at a home on North 6th Street and suspicion the homeowner, Jeffrey Thompson, was possessing and selling “switches,” the devices used to convert semi-automatic guns into fully automatic machine guns.Prosecutors said the unit executed a search warrant at the home on Jan. 3 after investigators reviewed multiple posts on Thompson’s Instagram account. The complaint included screenshots of the social media posts depicting a person with multiple firearms and converted or “switched” guns. The document also included images of various dogs.Assistant Milwaukee County District Attorney Amy Spanczak described the animals investigators found at the home in various stages of neglect. In one cage, there was “multiple piles of fecal matter and a plastic bucket for water that was empty,” Spanczak wrote. In another cage at the home, she described a dog as older and underweight. “The dog appeared emaciated with skull bones, hip and rib bones to be prominently protruding due to lack of nourishment.”Another dog “appeared to have scarring on his face and forearms and was visibly shaking form the cold weather,” she added in the complaint. The document also described a set of wooden beams attached to a tree. “Tied to the end of the wooden beam was a black and blue rope that was hanging about a foot off the ground. This rope was observed on Thompson’s Instagram page with a brown dog biting the end and hanging. This technique is used to train dogs to strengthen their jaw muscles and bite for fighting.”The complaint said the same day investigators executed the search warrant, they spotted Thompson, 22, in a vehicle near 34th and Villard Streets. The complaint said Thompson sped off from the traffic stop and led police on a chase reaching speeds of 98 miles an hour on residential streets for nearly 3 miles.Thompson ran a stop sign near Silver Spring Dr. and crashed into another vehicle, the complaint also said. After the crash, officers chased Thompson on foot and caught him, according to the document. Thompson, according to jail records, is being held on a $3,500 bond. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 14.
