Authorities rescued six dogs from a U-Haul truck in Southwest Harris County.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Several dogs were rescued after being found inside a U-Haul truck in the parking lot of a hotel in Southwest Harris County.
According to Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen’s office, six dogs were found in the back of a U-Haul parked at a hotel on the Southwest Freeway near Beltway 8.
Authorities said they got reports that the dogs were being kept in the back of the truck, which had shown up a couple of days prior.
When animal cruelty investigators got to the scene, they found two dogs in the front compartment with the windows cracked open. The other dogs were found in the back of the truck. They said two of the dogs were in kennels and one of the kennels wasn’t big enough for the dog to stand up in. Investigators said there was feces on the floor. Recorded temperatures in the truck were between 81 and 91 degrees.
Authorities said there was no water available for the dogs and there were several metal bowls with dry dog food. It’s unclear how long the dogs had been inside the truck but they showed signs of having heartworms and “gastrointestinal parasitism,” Pct. 1 officials said.
The dogs were removed and brought in for medical attention.
Authorities said the owner was known to have a lot of dogs and also cared for a stray cat colony at a property in the Alief area. They were known hoarders and had been evicted from the Alief property. They were in the process of moving their belongings and animals to a property outside of Harris County.
Four more dogs were found in the owner’s minivan.
A hearing will be held to determine if the dogs will be released back to the owner.
