Dogs are often our best and favorite travel companions when exploring the Great Lakes State. They enjoy the lush forests, snowy trails and sandy dunes just like us. If you’re looking for a spot to bring your pup for a shoreline strut or summer splash, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has updated their dog-friendly beach list.
Pets are welcome in Michigan state parks and campgrounds, state forest campgrounds, state-managed harbors, state-designated trails and boating access sites, according to the DNR.
Exceptions include designated swim beaches, endangered species habitats and other posted areas.
Pet owners are expected to clean up after their pet, keep them on a 6-foot leash at all times and never leave them unattended.
Pets are allowed along the shoreline with the exception of buoyed swim/bathing areas within state parks. Pets are also not allowed in bathroom or shower facilities.
This summer be mindful to keep dogs away from posted areas protecting piping plover nests.
