HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The Huntington-Cabell-Wayne Animal Shelter says they are over full capacity, with more dogs than places for them to stay.
Before colder temperatures arrive, the shelter says they are trying to adopt 50 dogs in five days, so all animals can come inside to live during the harsh winter months.
To do this, the shelter is offering $50 adoptions, a discount of more than $75 now through Saturday.
“Normally, it’s 125 for dogs and 175 for puppies. And the reality is this, even those prices do not cover what we provide for the dogs. Our goal is to get them started in a good way, by cutting the cost to fifty dollars. It’s a tremendous savings,” Andrea Parkins with the shelter said.
The price includes vaccines, flea and tick medicine, de-worming, spay and neuter surgery, and rabies vaccine. The shelter said they are doing this to improve the lives and safety of the dogs in the shelter, and keep those pups out of the cold.
“We are so over capacity, that we can’t bring all the dogs inside at night. There is a misconception that all those stash pins are where those dogs can live, and the reality is when temperatures drop that’s is not where you want them to live, and we need to be able to adopt out 50 dogs in order to be able to bring those other dogs inside,” Parkins said.
