LAPEER COUNTY, MI – Five dogs involved in an attack on a 66-year-old man have been euthanized, and the dogs’ owner is now facing felony charges.
The attack occurred April 13 on Reamer Road in Oregon Township when the man, who was walking along the roadway, was mauled by the animals.
Three Lapeer County deputies responded to what was initially reported as a disturbance.
“They were able to separate the victim from the dogs and get him into the ambulance,” said Lapeer County Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Troy Covert. “The injuries were severe.”
The specific extent of the victim’s injuries is not clear.
A previous report had been made about the dogs by another resident, Covert said, but the April incident was the first time they had attacked someone to this extent.
A civil hearing was held last week regarding the fate of the animals, and the decision was made to euthanize all five dogs.
Two of the dogs had a prior history of aggression and were older; the remaining three were younger, around eight months old, with no documented incidents before this.
Joyce Lee, 52, the owner of the dogs, is facing two felony counts of having a dangerous animal causing serious injury, and prosecutors are considering additional charges related to the younger dogs.
A probable cause conference is scheduled for June 11.
