The list of most popular dog breeds in the U.S. is filled with fun pups that would be great for families. But, the breeds that make up the top five (Frenchie, Labrador retriever, golden retriever, German shepherd, and poodle) tend to be on the active side. If you’re looking for a companion to get you off the couch, then they make a great choice. If you’re interested in adopting a more laid-back dog, you might want to do a bit more digging.
Dr. Rebecca MacMillan, BVetMed BSAVA PGCertSAM MRCVS, a veterinarian with TrustedHousesitters, breaks down some dog breeds that have a lazier demeanor. She says, “The most chilled-out dogs are those who have had appropriate socialization and training from an early age. Receiving plenty of daily exercise and mental stimulation also makes for a calmer and more settled dog too. But there is a genetic element as well, with some breeds having more relaxed personalities than others.”
Of course, all dogs have individual personalities, and no breed characteristics are guaranteed. Make sure you do your research before adopting from a reputable breeder or rescue organization.
Irish Wolfhound
Irish wolfhounds can top out at 140 pounds, but their size is paired with a relaxed demeanor. Dr. MacMillan says, “Irish Wolfhounds spring to mind when I think about chilled-out dogs. Every Irish Wolfhound I’ve met has been a gentle giant. Despite their large size, these dogs have a calm temperament and can make great family pets.”
Clumber Spaniel
Clumber spaniels were bred as hunting dogs, but they’d be just as happy relaxing on the sofa. Dr. MacMillan says, “The Clumber Spaniel can be quite a calm dog, and they are certainly not as high-energy as some of the other spaniel breeds. Clumber Spaniels thrive on human company and enjoy spending time relaxing with their family. They are quite happy going on long steady walks but wouldn’t make a good jogging companion, they are too laid-back for that.”
Bedlington Terrier
The Bedlington terrier is not super common—they ranked number 134 on the AKC’s most popular ranking of 2024. Dr. MacMillian says, “I find most Bedlington Terriers to be sweet natured and much more chilled out than most of the other terrier breeds. They are a good choice for owners that enjoy the terrier personality but want a calmer version. These dogs are compact in size, meaning they can slot into most family homes with ease. They are also low shedding, but they do require regular trips to the groomers to keep their coat neat and tidy.”
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Golden Retrievers
The Golden retriever is the lone breed that is among the top five most popular and most laid-back. Dr. MacMillian says, “Lastly, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Golden Retrievers are known for their laid-back, loving nature—and it’s no surprise that sitters and pets often form unforgettable bonds. Their gentle hearts and loyal companionship capturing sitters hearts offering a glimpse into the kind of meaningful connections that make the TrustedHousesitters community so special.”
