Columbus North had its ups and its downs when it took on state-ranked Floyd Central Wednesday.
The Bull Dogs gave up five unearned runs early and gave up a big inning late to suffer a 15-3 softball loss.
The Class 4A No. 7 Highlanders scored those five unearned runs in the first two innings to lead 5-1. North committed five errors that led to all five runs being scored.
“We’ve just got to make plays. We’ve got to make plays behind them,” North coach TJ Jarvis said. “Overall, I thought Bailee (Scruggs) pitched a great game, a really good game.”
The Bull Dogs (5-7) settled down between the third and sixth innings until giving up an eight-run seventh. Floyd Central (16-4) scored only two earned runs in the first six innings.
After North scored a run in the first inning, it scored the other two runs in the sixth. Payton Morris drew a two-out walk, and Scruggs singled to put runners on first and second. Miley McClellan smacked a triple to score both runners to make it 7-3.
If it wasn’t for the early mistakes, it could have been a different game with the Bull Dogs ahead 3-2.
“That was what we told them out there after the game, but we’ve definitely got to play cleaner,” Jarvis said. “We’re moving people around trying to find that right lineup.”
McClellan went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs to lead North. Morgan Jarvis went 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored.
The Bull Dogs will look to get back in the winning column when they visit Perry Meridian Thursday.
