BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Blount County police are investigating after 43 dogs were found neglected at an abandoned home in Blountsville.
In February, Blount County Animal Control Deputy Brock Echols responded to a report of loose dogs and animal abuse on Sawmill Road. When he arrived, Deputy Echols found about 15 dogs running freely on the property and 10 more inside cages.
He also reported hearing about 20 additional dogs inside the residence.
Echols tried to contact the owners of the property but was unsuccessful. After looking into the property and its ownership, he learned the owners were living in a neighboring county.
After another unsuccessful attempt by a neighboring agency to make contact with the owners, Deputy Echols was able to reach them over the phone and arrange to meet them at the residence.
While inspecting the property, Deputy Echols discovered more than 25 dogs outside the home. Nearly every dog was suffering from mange and severe malnutrition. Some had open wounds and various skin conditions, according to BCSO. The dogs also had no access to clean water or food.
The owners helped Deputy Echols enter the house, where they found eight more dogs.
Officials say the living conditions inside the house were unsuitable with standing water in the basement where the dogs were found. Five puppies that the owners were unaware of were also found.
The Blount County Adoption Center assisted the Sheriff’s Office in removing the dogs from the property.
As of March 12, 43 dogs have been recovered and several have had to be euthanized due to irreversible health conditions, Blount County officials say.
The Blount County Sheriff’s Office says criminal charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
