CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A Charlottesville pilot and his wife have been bringing back cats and dogs from Asheville, North Carolina since last Thursday.
So far, Eric Walden and Lauren Lucey have brought back 40 rescued animals.
“The people down there are still suffering terribly, and everyone is going to suffer for a long time, but the animals can’t help themselves,” Walden said. “It feels really good to be able to help these lives go somewhere safe, where they can be comfortable and live their best lives.”
Walden said his work is only only one piece of puzzle in making this mission happen.
“Green Dogs Unleashed were waiting on the ramp ready to pick up the animals and get them right away to their fosters,” Walden said.
The plane did not go to Asheville empty-handed, either. Dog and cat food was brought down for the shelters there.
Natural Pet Essentials is one of the groups who donated.
“I think it was about 1300 pounds of food, and we’ve got some of it here still that will make another trip down on a different day,” Store-owner Kim Davis said.
When Davis heard about what was happening, she said she jumped in to help with two feet.
“When there are people and animals in need elsewhere, this is what we do as a community, as a nation,” Davis said.
The animals brought back on Tuesday are going to receive care and be placed with foster parents. Eventually, they will be available for adoption through Green Dogs Unleashed.
