HESSMER, La. (KALB) – The Humane Society of Louisiana is expressing gratitude toward Marksville Police and a local animal rescuer for their swift action in saving four dogs found in dire condition inside a U-Haul trailer.
The dogs were discovered by a hotel worker who noticed their distressed barking. Upon investigation, the animals appeared dirty, emaciated and severely dehydrated. Authorities arrested James Clayton, 71, of Chenoweth, Texas, who is now facing animal cruelty charges.
Due to the local shelter being at capacity, Marksville Police reached out to a nearby rescuer for assistance. The rescuer recognized the urgent need for medical care and contacted the Humane Society of Louisiana. The dogs are receiving treatment at a veterinary clinic for dehydration, skin issues and overgrown nails.
The Humane Society has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise at least $1,000 to cover the veterinary expenses. They emphasize that had the dogs been left in the trailer for just a few more hours, they likely would not have survived due to the extreme heat and lack of water.
Residents have highlighted the pressing need for an animal shelter in Avoyelles Parish, citing the inadequate facilities and resources available to handle such emergencies. Without immediate intervention, the dogs would have faced grim prospects.
