EGG HARBOR TWP., NJ — Four dogs died after the shed they were being sheltered in caught fire, Egg Harbor Township police said.
The fire happened on Feb. 1 on the 4000 block of Tremont Avenue, police said in a news release. A third party call came in saying that a backyard shed was on fire.
The shed was fully engulfed when first responders arrived, police said. The homeowner said he had recently returned home and was unaware of any issues until the fire department showed up, according to police.
Six dogs were inside the shed, which was being used as a shelter for them, with heat, food and water available, police said.
Two dogs were rescued, but four died in the fire, police said. Members of the fire department were able to extinguish the blaze.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The police department’s humane law enforcement officers were notified of the incident and will be conducting a follow-up investigation.
