LEONI TOWNSHIP, MI – An afternoon fire killed four family pets and destroyed much of a Leoni Township home Wednesday, according to the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety.
Fire crews responded to a structure fire at 2:51 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the 1200 block of Breezy Lane, east Leoni Township.
Nobody was home at the time of the fire, Blackman-Leoni Director Darin McIntosh said in a post made to the department’s Facebook page. However, four dogs were killed in the blaze and the home suffered extensive damage.
An off-duty firefighter who lived nearby was among the first to report the fire, police said. He had seen the flames coming from the east side of the building.
Crews encountered heavy fire and smoke consuming most of the ground level of the residence when they arrived. Firefighters focused their efforts on the upper levels of the home as fire spread through the attic and void spaces above the main floor and garage, police said.
After several hours on scene, firefighters were able to bring the flames under control. Preliminary findings suggest the fire began in the kitchen and might have burned for several hours before being reported, police said.
A full investigation to determine the cause and origin of the flames is still underway.
Blackman-Leoni was assisted at the scene by Grass Lake Fire, Napoleon Fire, Jackson City Fire, Summit Fire and J-DART.
