MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A national animal rescue organization helped the Hardin County Animal Shelter (HCAS) rescue nearly 40 dogs from a rural property near Savannah, Tenn.
Officials with HCAS received numerous reports of a property with a growing population of dogs that were not being properly cared for. Lacking the financial means necessary to provide proper veterinary care for such a large group of dogs — much less the resources to house or contain the dogs — the animal shelter reached out to the Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) for help.
Based in Washington, D.C. and maintaining a rescue center in Gallatin, Tenn., ARC responded to the HCAS’s request for assistance by facilitating a plan that it named Operation Savannah Saves.
According to a statement given to ABC24 on Wednesday, May 28, the population of dogs on the property increased over the past several years due to uncontrolled breeding.
“Many of the dogs suffered from skin infections, untreated leg injuries, fur loss, snake bite wounds, dental disease, pregnancy, ear infections, anemia and internal and external parasites,” the statement read. “One dog was giving birth to a litter of puppies on a pile of trash when rescuers arrived and delivered eight puppies.”
The property became so overrun by dogs, that several were reportedly hit by cars on a nearby road.
The national rescue organization utilized its resources and constructed a team to facilitate the recovery of 36 dogs from the property. All of the dogs were transported to ARC’s Gallatin, Tenn., facility where they will receive “thorough veterinary exams, appropriate vaccinations and necessary medical treatments.” Once the dogs have been cared for, they will be cleared and sent to partner shelters and trusted rescue organizations that will ultimately “adopt them into loving homes.”
Tim Woodard, executive director of ARC, said, “Every contribution, whether it’s time or resources, makes a significant difference in the lives of these animals.”
