
METOMEN, Wis. (WBAY) – Three people were hurt and nearly a dozen dogs and cats died in a house fire overnight.
Firefighters responded just before 3 a.m. Friday to County Highway KK in the town of Metomen, south of Ripon.
A Fond du Lac County deputy saw an explosion come from the house.
A 911 caller said they were inside the house and there were others sleeping inside. Minutes later, people were jumping from the second floor to escape the fire.
Three people were taken to the hospital. One suffered a serious injury jumping and was airlifted from the hospital for advanced treatment. The other two were being treated for smoke inhalation.
Five dogs and six cats perished.
The house was a total loss.
The sheriff’s office says because of the size of the fire, firefighters came from Alto, Brandon/Fairwater, City of Fond du Lac, Town of Fond du Lac, Lamartine, Markesan, Ripon, Rosendale, Van Dyne and Waupun fire departments all responded to the scene, along with RIT3 search and rescue, the Ripon Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol and Life Star EMS.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
