SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ) — Three dogs have died after a man was forced to defend himself and his dog with a knife, after three aggressive dogs living in a nearby homeless camp attacked them as they left their car on U.S. Forest Service land, Deschutes County Sheriff’s said.
The man and his dog received minor injuries, while the owner of the three dogs, who was living in the nearby homeless camp, has been cited.
On February 6, 2025, at 11:40 a.m., Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported dog attack on U.S. Forest Service land (USFS Road 1505/430 Spur), about three miles southwest of Sisters.
Three aggressive dogs living in a nearby homeless camp attacked a man and his dog after exiting his vehicle. Fearing for his safety, he used a knife to defend himself and his dog. Two of the three attacking dogs died at the scene. Deputies determined his actions were justified.
The man and his dog sustained minor puncture wounds and received medical care.
Two of the attacking dogs died at the scene, while a third, found at a nearby transient camp, was later euthanized due to its injuries. The first two dogs were transported to Brightside Animal Shelter and the third dog was transported to the Bend Humane Society.
Deputies cited a transient woman, 56-year-old Denise Peiffer. She was identified as the dogs’ owner, and was cited for three counts of Animal at Large and Animal Nuisance, both “A” violations.
The U.S. Forest Service assisted in the investigation. Deputies also received reports of past aggressive dog incidents in the area.
KTVZ News has reached out to the U.S. Forest Service to learn more about their plans for the homeless camp, and if any immediate action is expected.
