3 dogs, cat and bird dead after Appomattox County house fire

A house fire in Appomattox County left three dogs, a cat and a bird dead Tuesday afternoon.

According to officials, a passerby called to report a house fire in the 4000 block of Pumping Station Road around 1:30 p.m.

About 35 firefighters responded from the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department and the Concord Volunteer Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, they reported smoke showing from the house, and nobody was home.

According to firefighters, the fire started in the kitchen, and there was extensive damage to that area. The rest of the house received heavy smoke damage.

Three dogs, a cat and a bird died as a result of the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials do not believe it was suspicious circumstances.

Firefighters will work with the Red Cross to make sure the residents have a place to stay.
