OXFORD, Conn — Connecticut State Police said animal control seized 24 dogs found in “deplorable conditions” in an Oxford home Tuesday morning.
Troopers from the Oxford Resident Trooper’s Office, along with state and local animal control officers, used a search warrant at the home at 10:18 a.m. for an animal cruelty investigation.
State police said the dogs were taken to local veterinary clinics for medical treatment.
The owner, John Artese, 59, of Oxford, is charged with 24 counts of animal cruelty, according to state police. Artese was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Derby Superior Court on June 30.
Rebecca Eddy, director of communications for the state Department of Agriculture, said their Animal Control Unit assisted Oxford’s resident troopers and that they have no further comment.
