2 puppies from Kentucky Humane Society to appear in 2025 Puppy Bowl. Meet Colonel and Julep

Two puppies from the Kentucky Humane Society are appearing in the next Puppy Bowl — the first time for the rescue.

Kentucky Humane Society PR & Marketing Director Andrea Mattingly said Colonel the Beagle and Julep, a St. Bernard mix, will tackle the competition at 2 p.m., Feb. 9, with Animal Planet. Of three puppies submitted by the nonprofit for casting, two were selected to participate.

“We love how the Puppy Bowl highlights amazing shelter animals available for adoption all over the United States,” Mattingly said. “It’s a fun way to show that shelter pets are just as loving and talented as any other, and it helps inspire people to consider adopting their next furry family member from a shelter!”

Mattingly said Colonel came to the Kentucky Humane Society at four days old with three siblings when their mom couldn’t nurse them. Staff members “immediately stepped up to the challenge” with constant care and bottle feedings and by four weeks old, each puppy had received more than 300 feedings in two-hour increments.

“Once they were old enough to eat independently, they were able to be in a foster home until they were old enough to be vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped,” Mattingly said. “While in foster we submitted Colonel for participation in the Puppy Bowl and he was selected!”

The beagle, four and a half months at the time of filming, is described as “small but mighty,” “very loveable and sweet” and “a bit shy but playful.” Since filming, he’s been adopted.

Julep

Julep was surrendered by her owner to the Kentucky Humane Society at two months old and is described as playful, feisty, smart and energetic.

Mattingly said Julep also loves a good game of tug-of-war and since filming at four and a half months, has been adopted by her foster. Mattingly says they believe Julep is a St. Bernard/Collie mix and knew she’d thrive in a home that can provide her with lots of physical activity and enrichment.

Julep’s previous owner turned her over through the Kentucky Humane Society’s owner surrender process after feeling overwhelmed with a puppy.

“We do our best to work with our community to assist pet owners who find themselves in tough situations. It’s our commitment to be there for people and pets when they need us most,” Mattingly said. “She spent some time in a foster home while we submitted her to the Puppy Bowl. After filming, her foster was so in love, she decided to adopt and make her a permanent part of her family!”

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
