BAUDETTE, Minn. (FOX 9) – A Minnesota family is mourning the loss of their two huskies after they say their best friends were shot and killed.
Runaway huskies
What we know: “It’s like losing a family member,” said Ramona Anderson Rowett, owner of the huskies.
On Christmas Eve their family was on a hike with their three huskies, when during a leash change two of them ran off. Tucker and Maple were about to turn 3 years old on Jan. 18.
“They ran off like huskies do. They’re the escape artists. They have a reputation,” said Rowett.
At the time, Rowett says the three huskies were on a hike in Zippel Bay State Park.
Then came the moment no dog owner wants to find out.
“When you get a call from the sheriff, it’s not good,” said Rowett.
Rowett says they searched everywhere for the huskies.
“We had signs along the perimeter of county roads 8 and 4. We had posters in town. The whole town was looking for them,” said Rowett.
Rowett says Tucker and Maple were found shot dead five days later.
Unfortunate deaths
Dig deeper: Rowett is concerned her dogs were killed by hunters.
“You can shoot a dog during deer season, that is legal, but in the law, there is no duty to report, and that came from the sheriff,” said Rowett.
According to a Minnesota State statute, a dog has to be wounding, killing or pursuing in a manner that endangers big game for it to be legal to shoot a dog. And if a citizen shoots a dog it has to be between Jan. 1 and July 14.
“One person in that community let us all down. We want consequences, and maybe to learn don’t do this again,” said Rowett.
What’s next: Rowett has filed a police report, and is still trying to find out unanswered questions – who did it and why.
