PORTLAND, CT — It took firefighters several hours to extinguish a blaze at a Portland property Monday that claimed the lives of two dogs. The home was a total loss, according to fire officials.
Firefighters responded to the call at 66 Meshomasic Trail at 1:33 p.m. on a report of a wood pile burning on the side of the house.
Firefighters arrived at the home and found that the fire was “well advanced.” The blaze had started at the back of the home and was moving rapidly through the home.
Firefighters stayed in the area putting out hotspots “most of the evening,” with units returning to service at 7 pm.
“We could not have done this without all the help from our mutual aid partners,” the fire department wrote in a Facebook post. “While the home was a total loss and this is a very devastating fire for our community we are grateful that no one was hurt in the fire.”
A GoFundMe has been set up for the family, who lost everything, including two dogs named Hope and Faith.
The fundraiser was started by Patience Hettrick.
“With hope and faith, I know we can help this family come home again,” Hettrick wrote. “Please consider helping them on their journey to rebuild.”
The fundraiser had generated $14,330 out of a $50,000 goal on 219 donations as of Tuesday morning.
