
Two dogs were found dead after a house fire on Wool Ave. in Portsmouth around 10 p.m., not far from High Street. The cause remains under investigation.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Two dogs have been found dead inside a home in Portsmouth after firefighters extinguished a fire late Wednesday night.
At around 10:00 p.m., the Portsmouth Police Department (PPD) received a report of a house fire in the 1300 block of Wool Avenue, not far from High Street. Around that time, Portsmouth Fire Rescue and Emergency Services (PFRES) crews were returning from another call and saw a large column of smoke coming from the area.
Crews called for more resources and began working a structure fire with possible occupants inside.
Crews aggressively attacked while the house was searched for occupants. No occupants were inside, but two dogs were found deceased.
Officials did not say what the dogs’ cause of death was.
Crews marked the fire under control at 10:16 p.m.
The fire is under investigation by the Portsmouth Fire Marshal’s Office.
