While it may take some time until the dogs are ready to be adopted, shelter director Angela Hollinshead said they won’t be waiting for long.
KENT COUNTY, Mich. — After being rescued from living in a truck, 19 dogs are on the road to recovery—and soon, these dogs will be available for adoption.
The dogs had been living in a truck with their owner, Carolyn Newsome, who was taken into custody and charged with animal abuse on Oct. 14. On Tuesday, Newsome agreed to surrender the dogs.
Police originally said 17 dogs were found in the truck—but one dog ended up having puppies, bringing the total to 19.
The dogs have been with the Kent County Animal Shelter since October. While it may take some time until the dogs are ready to be adopted, shelter director Angela Hollinshead said they won’t be waiting for long.
“Many of the dogs have friendly dispositions and, once cleared, are likely to be adopted quickly,” said Hollinshead. “Our veterinary team is working to complete spay/neuter surgeries and address any medical or behavioral needs.”
The influx of animals has caused a strain on the animal shelter. There are currently 94 dogs being cared for, with 30 of those ready for adoption.
Through Dec. 1, all pets are adoptable for a reduced $50 fee. That covers a Kent County dog license, flea and tick preventative, and heartworm preventative.
“We currently have 94 dogs in our care and knowing that we can begin the path to adoption for this new group of dogs is a huge relief,” said Hollinshead. “If you are ready to welcome a new best friend into your life, our compassionate and knowledgeable staff are here to help you.”
